It has high success rate (88%) and is less invasive. It has fewer chances of recurrences. Ozone nucleolysis is usually done for the management of pain due to slipped disc or herniated disc. Its action is due to the active oxygen atom (singlet oxygen) liberated from it. It attaches with the proteo-glycan bridges in the nucleus pulposus. They are broken down and they no longer capable of holding water. As a result the disc shrinks and there is decompression of the adjacent nerve roots.
